Massive earthquake rocked Chile. Measuring 8.8

At 3:34am on Saturday, a massive earthquake rocked Chile. Measuring 8.8 on the Richter scale, tied for the seventh strongest quake ever recorded (the strongest ever actually happened in Chile as well, in 1960, a 9.5 on the Richter scale). Most readers have seen the images coming out of the country: roads and bridges crumpled like paper, cars dangling over chasms, buildings calved in two. The damage has left two million people displaced. Chile is a small but magnificent country. Its culture of Chile is rich with great thinkers and important artists, such as: Pablo Neruda and Gabriela Mistral. The Chileans are a soulful and intelligent people. The country’s infrastructure is not like other Latin American countries. They have excellent public transportation, fantastic universities and modern buildings. The fact that only a little over 200 people have died is due to their government’ s readiness and organization.
The United Nations said Monday it would begin rushing aid deliveries to Chile after the government officially asked for help in its recovery from this weekend's massive earthquake. U.N. humanitarian spokeswoman Elisabeth Byrs said Chile formally made its request Monday, two days after the 8.8-magnitude quake struck about 200 miles south of the capital, Santiago,
killing over 700 people. Byrs told the Associated Press that the global body was now "ready to take action." Before the request, international aid groups had sent some funds and experts. But their action was limited as Chilean officials were busy assessing the destruction from the earthquake and the needs of up to 2 million affected people. Chile's government identified its emergency needs as temporary bridges, field hospitals, satellite phones, electric generators, damage assessment teams, water purification systems, field kitchens and dialysis centers, Byrs said. "We are prepared to provide assistance," Byrs told AP. "It could be quite fast, given that our experts are on standby and were alerted in the region." U.N. and Red Cross officials said details of the destruction in Chile remained sketchy, noting that aftershocks were a continued risk and citing a number of "silent areas" with no contact to the outside world. The international Red Cross said volunteers were providing first aid in areas hardest hit, and that it was appealing for donations within Chile. It has released $280,000 of its own funds, and is sending aid experts to help recovery efforts, but stressed that local officials were taking the lead - unlike in Haiti, where the January earthquake destroyed large parts of the capital, Port-au-Prince, and killed over 200,000. "Haiti was a different case: We had an office there and we had people on the ground. We have no office in Chile," said Marcal Izard, a Red Cross spokesman in Geneva. "We are organizing help for families trying to reconnect. But it's really preliminary. We need to talk to the Chilean Red Cross and first find out what they need."

NATO forces recapture vessel seized by pirates

(CNN) -- NATO forces recaptured a ship Friday that had been taken over by armed Somali pirates, a spokesman for the European Union Naval Forces told CNN.
The ship's 25 crew members were freed, Commander John Harbour said.
The Ariella, an Antigua and Barbuda-flagged shipping vessel, was following a route from the Red Sea, through the Gulf of Aden, and into the Indian Ocean Friday when it was seized by the pirates, according to Harbour. A European Maritime patrol airplane arrived on the scene shortly after receiving a distress call from the Ariella, he noted. After the plane verified the presence of pirates on the ship, nearby NATO Danish Special Forces approached and boarded the ship. Special Forces members found the ship's crew hiding in a compartment, unharmed. Both the Special Forces and the EU Naval Forces believe the pirates fled when the warship arrived.
The Ariella is owned by the Slovenian company Splosna Plovda, according to Harbour. The route being followed by the Ariella at the time of the attack is a frequent target for pirates. It is strongly patrolled by anti-piracy forces, including NATO and individual countries' navies. EU Naval Forces frequently work in conjunction with NATO on anti-piracy operations.

Ship seized with cocaine worth $600M

London, England (CNN) -- Spanish police have seized a ship carrying nearly $600 million worth of cocaine, in a joint operation with London's Metropolitan Police, Britain's Serious Organised Crime Agency, and maritime authorities, Scotland Yard announced.
The ship, carrying an estimated 1.5 tons of cocaine, was boarded 200 miles off the Iberian coast early Tuesday morning, police said. Police believe the drugs were bound mostly for London -- and had a street value of 375 million British pounds, they said. Members of the ship's crew were arrested, police said while suggesting that other arrests also had been made. "The subjects are experienced criminals with long-standing associations. Their network stretches from London and Spain to the Caribbean and Colombia," the Metropolitan Police said in a written statement.
Police did not name the suspects or say what they were charged with. British law restricts what information can be published about people who have been arrested, for fear of prejudicing legal proceedings. The 150-foot ship, the Destiny Empress, is a former Coast Guard vessel that set off from the West Indies. The seizure of the ship was based on an intelligence operation, the police said in announcing it Tuesday.
Peter Beyer of the Metropolitan Police central task force thanked the Spanish police for their role in the operation, saying, "Their dedication and professionalism has ensured that the harm caused by this criminal network to the communities of London has been reduced significantly."

Containership Company launches in April

A startup container shipping line based out of Norway said Friday it will launch a direct service from the Chinese port of Taicang to Southern California in April. The service will be operated with five vessels, ranging in size from 2,600 TEUs to 2,900 TEUs, said Franck Kayser, chief operating office of the new line, The Containership Company. Transit time will be 16 days from Taicang to Southern California.
Kayser said in an interview with
American Shipper that the idea to base the service out of Taicang was to reduce costs for shippers in China’s Jiangsu province. Taicang sits on the Yangtze River about 30 miles upriver from Shanghai. Kayser said calling directly at Taicang would reduce $150 to $200 in trucking costs shippers generally have to pay to move containers to Shanghai. “It’s the first direct service from Taicang, so it gives us first mover’s advantage,” he said.To emphasize the potential uniqueness of the service, American Shipper affiliate ComPair Data has no listing for Taicang for any direct services to North America. However, Taicang is a growing port with more than 1 million TEUs of volume and a diverse base of shippers, including BP, DuPont, Unilever and Nike.
Reports of the emergence of The Containership Company surfaced in 2009 amidst the worst crisis in the history of container shipping. The idea for the company was reportedly born out of the idea of taking chartered tonnage at attractive rates in a depressed market, then passing the savings on to shippers. Kayser said the five vessels for the service have been chartered for three to four years.“Of course, when you take them on a longer-term basis, you pay a little bit over the market rate, but we have got a reasonable rate,” he said. Kayser said it has yet to be decided whether the service will call in Los Angeles or Long Beach, and that the line is in negotiations on where to call. He also said The Containership Company will launch a service between China and northern Europe at some point in 2010. The company is backed by a group of 30 investors, none of which own a “significant part,” Kayser said. The company will be based in Norway, with startup capital of $25 million.
That it’s based in Norway could fuel earlier reports that Norwegian shipping magnate John Fredriksen is involved in the venture. Fredriksen, who has primarily been involved in the oil, gas and dry bulk shipping sectors, is a shareholder in the European tourism giant TUI, which until 2008 wholly owned container line Hapag-Lloyd. Kayser is a former executive with Maersk Line and CMA CGM.The timing of the launch of the service is interesting, given that it comes weeks before new annual transpacific contracts are due to be signed. Carriers on the transpacific have spent the last six months shrinking capacity in the trade and raising rates after rates sunk to unsustainable levels in early 2009.The entry of a low-cost operator (an early report of The Containership Company’s model likened it to a low-cost airline) has the potential to upset the progress established carriers have made in driving up rates, though the service will add a relatively small amount of capacity (less than 2 percent of current total weekly capacity from Asia to the U.S. West Coast) on the lane.
